What's so amazing about grace?

P D Yancey 1977 OMF Lit 1998

p11  Church!... why would I ever go there?  They just make me feel worst!  The down and out who flocked to Christ during NT times, no longer feel welcome among His followers in today churches.

p16  I rejected church for a time because I found so little grace there.  Church uphold standards of perfection and have no place for imperfect people like me.  I returned to church, because I found grace no where else.

I have barely tasted of grace myself, have rendered less than I have received, and in no wise, am an expert on grace.  Grace can be dissected like a frog, but in the process the poor thing dies, and the innards are to say the lest, discouraging.  I rather convey grace then explain it.

p26  Grace demands nothing...more than...awaiting with confidence, and acknowledge it with gratitude.  In Babette's Feast...they heard sermons on grace every Sunday, and the rest of the week tried to earn God's favour with their pieties and renunciations.  Grace came to them in the form of a feast of a lifetime (costing Babette her savings of her lifetime) lavished on those who had in no way earned it, who barely had the faculties to receive it.

p29/30  Like fine wine poured into a jug of water is Christ's Grace diluted in the vessel of the church.  Grace is Christianity's best gift to the world...yet in most places, you gain the church's approval by following the prescribed pattern, laid down by man.

p60/61  the New Maths of Grace...in Jesus parable, workers were paid the same wages for different hours of work!  This is unfair compensation.  Grace is not about fairness.  Why blessed Jacob the conniver?  Samson the delinquent?  Solomon the womanizer?

p63/64  Peter counted 153 fishes, and seek to forgive 7x70 times.  Grace is not counting.  Grace is not countable...the New Maths of Grace is an accountant nightmare...atrocious and unacceptable.  This world says...nothing is for free, demand your rights, get what you deserve/pay...Grace says I did not get what I deserve...I deserve punishment...yet God gave me His love and acceptance.

p70/72  Grace means there is nothing I can do to make God love me more and there is nothing I can do to make God love me less.  The world runs by ungrace...everything depends on what I do...Christ calls us to another way that depends not on our performance but on His.

p79  Like a spiritual defect encoded in the family DNA, ungrace gets passed on in an unbroken chain from father to sons, to grandchildren...

p86/92  it's a dog eat dog world...not dog forgive dog...I flee from the risk of grace to the security of ungrace...forgiveness is unwise, impractical, unappreciated.  My wounded part sets conditions...I never finds forgiveness easy.

p85/93  Behind every act of forgiveness, lies the wounds of betrayal; and the pain does not easily fades away.  Forgiveness is an act of faith...by forgiving, I release my right to get even and leave fairness to God to work these out.

p96-98  Forgiveness (Greek : to release) alone can break the cycle of pain and blame. Resentment (Greek : to relive the sentiment again and again) prolong the hurt.  Over the 900yrs they lived on earth, Eve probably said...you ate the fruit!  Adam probably retorted...you gave it to me.  If only one would apologise...if only one would forgive.  Forgiveness does not settle the questions of fairness...but it allows us to begin anew...

p179/180  Loopholes of grace...grace abuse stems from the confusion of condoning and forgiving...I am planning divorce/adultery...do you think God can forgive me later?

p184/187  I want to do it.  I know it is wrong but I can always get forgiveness later.  Grace becomes a license for immorality.  Freedom to do what I like (anger, lusts, smoking etc) will inevitably leads to enslavement to these.

p190/191  God/grace is not about to boss us around; neither is He our magic genie to serve at our command/will.  Focus not on what can I get away.  Appreciate Grace not exploiting Grace.

p195  Rigid institutional rules prevent us from getting to Christ, because the pettiness of church block the way.  Legalism pursuit of false purity is an elaborate scheme of grace avoidance, quietly encouraged by satan, and unthinkingly enforced by men.

Knowing the Law by heart...without knowing the heart of the Law.

Some crap i learned years ago...

622 573 514 624

This set of numbers can help you calculate which day of the week any given date is if you do not have a calendar with you.

The numbers represents the 12 months of the year.

The first 6 is for January, 2 for February, 2 for March and so on...

Here's how to calculate.

Eg. 12 May 2008

Corresponding number for May - 7
Date in May - 12

Add these up (12 + 7) you will get 19.
For 2008 you will need to add a factor of 3 (calibration explained below), hence 19 + 3 = 22.
Based on 1-Mon 2-Tue 3-Wed 4-Thur 5-Fri 6-Sat 7-Sun 8-Mon 9-Tue etc etc, 22 should be a Monday, hence 12 May 2008 falls on a Monday.

Before you start using this set of numbers, bear in mind you will have to "calibrate" it at the beginning of each year and again on 1st March if that year happens to be a leap year.

Here's how to calibrate.
Eg. 1st January 2008
Jan = 6
Date = 1
6 + 1 = 7
Since 1st Jan 2008 is a Tue(2), all dates in 2008 must add a factor of 2. However, since 2008 happens to be a leap year, all dates prior to 29 Feb add 2, all dates after 29 Feb add 3.

Hmmmm seems like it's a little more difficult to explain than to actually use the formula hahaha. With practise you should be able to master it in no time.

Ya I know it's crap....but it's ALWAYS fun to know SOME crap right?

One Small Choice - Joyful Devotion.

This Soul searching article was taken from the daily bread devotion.

Sometime we think it might be just a small choice or minute decision to be made but somehow the consequent turnout to be ultimate & permanent.

Nevertheless, I was adored & encouraged by the point out at the end said “Serving God will not always be the easy choice. But it is a choice that brings the kind of consequence we can live with”

May God bless us with many blessing and joyful days when we chosen to Serve HIM.

Cheer! :-) :-)
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Joshua 24:15-18 (New International Version)

15. But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."
16. Then the people answered, "Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods!

17 It was the LORD our God himself who brought us and our fathers up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.

18 And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because he is our God."

As a boy, my father often played violin in the local symphony. This budding young talent continued improving into his high school years.
Then one day he decided to join his buddies in a harmless prank. As they raced through the school hallways and out the door, my dad hurried to follow them. The door slammed just as he reached it. His left hand smashed the glass of the door—severing the tendons to three fingers. All the doctors could do was tie the tendons in knots, rendering his fingers useless and taking the violin out of his life forever.
I wonder how Dad’s life might have been different had he not made that one small choice. “What-ifs” have dubious merit—we can always second-guess ourselves. But we cannot underestimate the impact of our choices. One choice can produce lifelong consequences, for good or bad.
Joshua’s counsel is a good place to start. “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve,” he told Israel. “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:15).
Serving God will not always be the easy choice. But it is a choice that brings the kind of consequence we can live with. —
Bill Crowder
I am resolved to follow the Savior,Faithful and true each day;Heed what He sayeth, do what He willeth—He is the living way. —Hartsough
What you will be tomorrow depends on the choices you make today.
